Filter coffee is iconic within Third Wave Coffee, and few brewers represent the third wave of the coffee movement as clearly as the AeroPress. This strange-looking plastic device turns out to be an incredibly versatile filter brewer.
Admittedly, the first generations were not particularly attractive. Aerobie has since taken the needs of its target audience more seriously and improved both the appearance and feel of the AeroPress.
One thing that has not changed throughout the AeroPress’s 15-year history is the preparation method. In short, it works like this: place a paper filter inside the cap and attach it to the brewing chamber. Add the coffee and hot water, stir, and once you think, “That has probably brewed for long enough,” use the plunger to press the finished coffee into your cup.
Then you drink it and marvel at the velvety mouthfeel and pronounced fruit flavours produced by the AeroPress. The combination of paper filtration and full immersion creates the perfect hybrid between drip and immersion brewing—or, in other words, between filter coffee and French press preparation.
Also worth mentioning: this thing is extremely robust. You could practically throw the AeroPress off a roof and it would not break. Not that we have tested it, but that is what we have heard. If you need preparation tips, we will also be happy to help you personally—we have a few tricks up our sleeves.
